NPU Urges To Conserve Energy

Norwich Public Utilities (NPU) is anticipating a surge in power demand due to the prevailing excessive heat and humidity across the state. In response, the utility has issued a press release urging customers to conserve power.

NPU has two primary reasons for encouraging energy conservation during this period. Firstly, their annual electricity costs are directly related to peak demand days, and reducing usage on such days can result in cost savings for both the utility and its customers. Secondly, minimizing energy consumption helps prevent excessive wear and tear on transformers, transmission lines, and distribution lines, allowing the equipment to cool down faster and enhancing its overall reliability.

To assist customers in conserving energy, NPU provides several tips in the press release, including:

1. Operating air conditioners only when someone is home and setting the temperature to 72°F or higher.

2. Delaying the use of large appliances like dishwashers and clothes dryers until after 8 p.m.

3. Minimizing the use of heat-generating appliances such as computers and TVs until after 8 p.m.

4. Opting to cook using stovetops, microwaves, or grills instead of ovens.

5. Installing window coverings to block out the sun and reduce heat indoors.

6. Using energy-efficient lighting solutions.

NPU also reminds the public that extreme summer weather can be just as hazardous as winter storms, emphasizing the importance of being mindful and prepared during hot weather conditions. By following these energy conservation guidelines, customers can not only potentially save money but also contribute to the overall reliability of the electrical infrastructure.
